Abstract
Many epidemiological studies have shown an association between air pollution and increased morbidity and mortality, both daily and over time. This review considers acute effects of air pollution on respiratory diseases mainly on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Short-term exposure to air pollution worsens symptoms and can reduce lung function in patients with asthma and COPD. In addition, air pollution are also associated with the increased risk of emergency room visits, hospitalization and death for patients with respiratory diseases.
