Abstract

The inhalation route for delivering medications to airways is increasingly common due to its quick onset action and fewer systemic side effects. The benefits of inhaled therapy have long been recognized from ancient time. However, most of noticeable innovations have occurred after introduction of the first pressurized metered dose inhaler (pMDI). During the past 60 years, innovation in inhaler technology continued and accelerated with an advance in science. In this review, we describe three main parts of innovation in inhaled therapy and speculate not only how it may improve outcome of respiratory diseases but also how it can enhance patient adherence to inhalers or the process of self-care.
