Who Are at Risk for COPD?
Jung Ji-Ye

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. COPD is the result of complex interplay between clinical and molecular (ie, genetic) risk factors. It is caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often from cigarette smoke. People with COPD are at increased risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer and a variety of other conditions. Besides cigarette smoke, genetic factors, age and sex, reduced growth and development of lung, exposure to particles, asthma and airway hyper-reactivity, chronic bronchitis, and infections are important risk factors for COPD. Identifying risk factors for COPD and better understanding their interactions may lead to strategies that reduce the prevalence of COPD.
