Purpose: The aim of the this study was to determine accuracy of surgeon-performed ultra-sonography (US)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FANC) of thyroid nodule.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of patients who underwent FNAC for thy-roid nodule between January 2011 and December 2012 in the Department of Surgery. A to-tal of 492 patients and 615 cases of thyroid nodule were included; 107 patients underwent thyroidectomy and 142 thyroid nodules were reported in final pathology.
Results: Among 492 patients and 615 thyroid nodules, FNAC showed 50 non-diagnostic, 393 benign, seven follicular neoplasms, 45 atypia of undetermined significance, and 120 malignancy results. In the final pathology reports, there were 113 malignancies and 29 be-nign lesions. The overall results of US-guided FNAC for malignant thyroid nodules were: sensitivity 97.9%, specificity 91.7%, false positive rate 8.3%, false negative rate 2.1%, and accuracy 96.7%.
Conclusion: Surgeon-performed US guided FNAC offers clear clinical benefits in terms of diagnostic yield of patients with thyroid nodule.
