Abstract
Malformations of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare presentations and are usually asymptomatic. They are caused by disturbances in the embryological formation of the ve-nous system or can develop as a result of perinatal venous thrombosis with secondary im-pairment of the venous development. We report on the case of an 18 year-old man whose chief complaint was a long lasting hematuria without pain. Laboratory findings were rela-tively normal and the ultrasound described a 60 cm/second velocity gradient between the in-trahepatic IVC and infrahepatic IVC. Diagnostic venography showed complex malforma-tion of the intrahepatic IVC and both renal veins drained into retroperitoneal hemiazygous veins without thrombosis.
