Abstract
For trauma surgeons it is essential to perform diagnostic procedures and surgical interven-tions to control massive bleeding from trunk or torso injuries, which is the first leading cause of death, within the golden hour. Because most severely injured patients are hemodynami-cally unstable and trauma surgeons do not have ample time to navigate all injuries, definitive radiologic imaging such as computed tomography could not be performed for diagnosis of trunk or torso injuries. Under such circumstances, Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) is the most useful modality which can be easily applied at the bedside by a surgeon. The FAST technique consists of serial scans of four areas - pericardial area, right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant abdominal regions, and pelvis; it can be completed rap-idly and simultaneously. The accuracy of FAST is up to 100%, if performed by an experi-enced operator under the proper situation and the result of the test is interpreted by correla-tion with the patient's clinical picture. Consequently, FAST provides the surgeon with a rap-id and accurate patient assessment tool, which could be widely used from the accident scene to the trauma bay and improved the delivery of care to blunt trauma patients.
