Abstract

|
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most common cause of nosocomial infection in patients underwent operation and correlate with prolonged the period of hospitalization, increased hospital costs and increased morbidity and mortality. However, according to recent numerous reports, the majority of SSIs may be prevented by continued surveillance, early detection and removal of risk factors for it. Risk factors related to SSIs can be classified as the patient, the surgeon, the surgical environment or used matter, perioperative management, the type of procedure, the pathogen and antibiotics. The purpose of this review was to identify risk factors for the development SSIs and available strategies for the prevention of it.
