Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate prophylactic antibiotic use and surgical site infection according to qual?ity assessment of surgical prophylactic antibiotics.

Methods: We conducted observational studies on the use of antibiotics for surgical prophylaxis in patients who underwent
surgery at National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital from July to September 2012 and from September to November
2015. The use of appropriate prophylactic antibiotics, including whether administration of antibiotics within one hour before
skin incision, the use of third-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, aminoglycoside administration, and the use of antibiotics in combination, duration of antibiotics use, and surgical site infection were analyzed.

Results: Of the 503 surgeries, most of patients were received the prophylactic antibiotics. The use of prophylactic antibiotics within one hour before incision was properly used in both 2012 and 2015. There was no difference in the use of third-genera?tion cephalosporins or in the use of aminoglycosides between the surgery in 2012 and the surgery in 2015. The use of antibiot?ics in combination (from 4.6% in 2012 to 0.8% in 2015) and duration of antibiotic use (from 3.51¡¾4.91 days in 2012 to 2.41¡¾3.59 days in 2015) decreased.

Conclusion: It was concluded that the continued participation of quality assessment of surgical prophylactic antibiotics had a positive effect on appropriate use of antibiotics.
