Biofilms influence on both acute and chronic wounds healing. The role of biofilm is related to wound infection and affects delayed wound healing, however, its role still remains not clearly, and there is no gold standard diagnostic methods to detect biofilm in wounds. Wound infection is challenging health consequences and its prevention, an appropriate treatment is a pivotal key factors to intervene bioburden in wound bed and avoid resistance to antibiotics. Although biofilms cause a delay in healing and increase the risk of wound infection, it can be prevented and controlled. Understanding of biofilms such as how to develop and rebuild can be helpful to make an optimal clinical decision to manage infected wounds including non-healing and stalled wounds by using antimicrobial agents, wound debridement, and antiseptic cleansing.
