Abstract

Anesthetic agents and management are known to inhibit immune responses either indirectly by modulating the stress response or directly by disturbing the function of immune cells. The most important defense against bacterial contamination is oxidative killing by neutrophil. Thus, ensuring adequate oxygenation as well as depleting immunosuppression itself is important to maintain immunity and to prevent surgical site infection (SSI) during surgery and anesthesia. Anesthesiologists are involved in the care of surgical patients when they are at their most vulnerable state. During this period, anesthesiologists should use all possible measures to prevent the risk of infection. The purpose of this review is to identify the role of anesthesiologists in preventing SSI during surgery.
