Abstract
Purpose: Th is study was carried out with the purpose to determine the morphologic diff erences between Korean and Belarusian dental arch forms for the maxilla and mandible on vestibular and lingual surfaces. Comparison the form and dimensions of arch wires for both jaws and surfaces, which may be used for orthodontic treatment in both ethnic groups, helps to determine an appropriate approach to the individual forming of the archwire in the straightwire bracket system for achieving the most stable, functional and esthetic result in orthodontic treatment.

Methods: 60 models contained mandible and maxillary dental casts of 30 Belarusian and 30 Korean subjects were scanned, and 3-D virtual models were created. Th e FA points and three points, according to the three level of lingual surface were selected and one vestibular and three lingual curves were drawn through joining of selected points on each cast. Th e average values of points in each group were calculated and average dental arches were created. Th e arch forms were compared by the way of superimposition of created curves, and the distances between corresponding points were analyzed.

Results: Th e study demonstrated no ethnic diff erences in form on the vestibular surface, but showed the distinction on lingual surface on both jaws. Th e prevalence in most of measurements of Korean group under Belarusian group was revealed, exclusion was only canine depth which was signifi cantly deeper in the Belarusian group on the mandible: Belarusian group, 4.85¡¾1.1 mm; Korean group, 4.20¡¾0.8 mm; p=0.011 (vestibular surface) and Belarusian group, 7.54¡¾0.9 mm; Korean group, 6.83¡¾1.1 mm; p=0.007 (lingual surface).

Conclusion: Th e vestibular average arch forms derived from maxilla and mandible of Korean and Belarusian normal occlusion didn¡¯t show racial diff erences in form, but showed the distinction on lingual surface on both jaws. Th e study demonstrated ethnic diff erences in the dimensions according to vestibular and lingual surfaces on both jaws, namely predominance in most of measurements of Korean group under Belarusian group, an exception was only canine depth. Th e convex shape in an area of the second premolars, strongly pronounced on the Korean maxilla was revealed and must be taken into consideration during the lingual orthodontic treatment.
