Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between tongue volume and positions with various craniofacial growth patterns.

Materials & Methods: Tongue volumes, tongue positions, and hyoid positions of 54 adult patients who had undergone cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for orthodontic diagnosis between March 2016 and February 2017 were evaluated. The associations of tongue volume and positions with craniofacial morphologies were assessed using multivariate linear regression analysis.

Results: The tongue volume, tongue position below the posterior nasal spine, vertical tongue tip position, and vertical and horizontal hyoid positions had significant associations with the lateral cephalometric variables point A-nasion-point B, anteroposterior dysplasia indicator, overbite depth indicator, sella-nasion to mandibular plane angle, and overbite.

Conclusion: Craniofacial growth patterns have significant associations with tongue volume and positions. Patients with skeletal Class III malocclusions and vertical growth patterns tend to have larger tongues and lower tongue positions.
