The purpose of this study is to explore how the effect of the health status of older women living alone in rural areas on their depression varies depending on social capital. For this study, older women aged over 65 living alone in rural in 7 areas in Gyungsangbuk-do and Gyungsangnam-do provinces were surveyed, and eventually the data of 302 women was used for analysis. As the method of study, regression analysis was implemented to verify the moderating effect of social capital in the relationship between the health status of older women living alone in rural areas and their depression. The result shows that the number of chronic diseases and self-rated health are the key elements affecting depression, and that the level of depression increases as the more chronic diseases they have and the more negative their self-rated health is. It also shows that social capital mitigates the negative effect of self-rated health on depression. Based on this result, this study suggests the necessity of social capital for older women living alone in rural areas.
