Purpose: To evaluate hemodynamic changes during on-day vitrectomy for elderly patients referred during cataract surgery
Methods: This retrospective study included 10 patients (85 years or older) referred during cataract surgery who underwent same-day vitrectomy. Blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate measured in the ward were compared with those measured immediately preoperative in the operating room, and the highest values were measured during surgery
Results: Mean age of the patients was 88.9 ¡¾ 3.4 years. In the ward, the mean systolic and diastolic BP was 150.0 ¡¾ 16.3 mmHg and 80.0 ¡¾ 8.2 mmHg, respectively, and pulse rate was 78.5 ¡¾ 13.6. The same values measured immediately preoperative were 158.0 ¡¾ 15.7 mmHg, 79.5 ¡¾ 5.9 mmHg, and 74.1 ¡¾ 10.3, respectively, and the highest values during the operation were 159.8 ¡¾ 12.8 mmHg, 82.8 ¡¾ 6.9 mmHg, and 83.9 ¡¾ 13.9, respectively. The highest systolic BP during surgery was significantly higher than that measured in the ward (p = 0.038). However, the difference between intraoperative BP and that measured right before surgery was not significant (p = 1.000). Diastolic BP and pulse rate did not vary among the three time points
Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that BP can increase during on-day vitrectomy even when BP is not high in the ward and suggests the need for careful BP monitoring during vitrectomy.
