Purpose: To report intraocular inflammation after using anti-adhesion agents, including chitosan.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who presented with red-eye and eye pain after general or gynecologic surgery using anti-adhesion agents (Mediclore¢ç, CGbio, Seongnam, Korea) from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018 in Kosin University Gospel Hospital.
Results: Of the 2,694 patients who use anti-adhesion agents, 14 (0.51%) received treatment for red-eye and eye pain from July 21, 2017 to October 8, 2018. These 14 patients underwent six thyroid lobectomies, two total thyroidectomies, three laparoscopic cholecystectomies, two unilateral adnexectomies, and one bilateral adnexectomy. Red-eye and eye pain occurred on average at 1.50 days following surgery: two patients on the day of surgery, nine patients on the 1st day, one patient on the 3rd day, one patient on the 4th day, and one patient on the 5th day after surgery. The mean logMAR vision was 0.01 ¡¾ 0.10 for the first visit and 0.03 ¡¾ 0.17 at the 4th week. The mean intraocular pressure was 15.10 ¡¾ 5.25 mmHg for the first visit and 13.83 ¡¾ 3.54 mmHg at the 4th week. According to SUN Working Group grading, the anterior chamber cell was +0.53 ¡¾ 0.57 for the first visit and 0 at the 2nd week. Of the 14 patients, four had auricular chondritis. The average erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 54.50 ¡¾ 31.98 mm/hour (normal range ¡Â 16 mm/hour). Antibiotic eye solution, NSAID eye solution, steroid eye solution, and oral NSAID and Prednisolone were used for treatment. After 1 month, all red-eye and eye pain had resolved.
Conclusions: Anti-adhesion agents including chitosan and intraocular inflammation are thought to be related. Following treatment, all eyes improved within several weeks. Further research is necessary to identify the underlying pathology.
