Purpose: To investigate the longitudinal changes of retinal sensitivity using microperimetry in patients with treatment-naive idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM).
Methods: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for patients diagnosed with idiopathic ERM from June 2020 to June 2021. All patients underwent best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), optical coherence tomography, and microperimetry at the time of diagnosis and at 6 and 12 months after diagnosis. Retinal sensitivity was measured using Compass fundus microperimetry. The mean retinal sensitivity (MRS), defined as the arithmetic average of the retinal sensitivities of the nearest 4 points from the fovea, was calculated in each test and compared.
Results: This retrospective study included 31 eyes of 31 patients, and the mean age was 63.6 ¡¾ 6.6 years at the time of diagnosis. The BCVA was maintained for 12 months after diagnosis (p = 0.283), and central macular thickness (CMT) was increased for 12 months after diagnosis (p <0.001). However, the superonasal, inferonasal, superotemporal, and inferotemporal retinal sensitivity and MRS were maintained for 12 months after diagnosis (p > 0.05). A linear mixed model analysis showed that change in MRS was negatively associated with CMT, but this was not statistically significant (estimate, -0.002; p = 0.500). Age was negatively correlated with change in MRS (estimate, -0.083; p = 0.009).
Conclusions: There was no significant change in retinal sensitivity of patients with treatment-naive idiopathic ERM at 12 months after diagnosis.
