Abstract
Retinal degeneration such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration are the predominant cause of blindness in spite of the development of various therapeutic modalities. These diseases result in diffuse loss of the retinal photoreceptor layer at their end stages, while the inner retinal layer remains relatively preserved. Retinal prostheses, classified as epiretinal, subretinal, and suprachoroidal implants based on the location of the electrodes, have been developed, providing partially improved vision in everyday life. This paper explored the current status of retinal prostheses and recent advancements through literature review.
