Musa sapientum L. (Musaceae) a medicinal plant, is indicated for the treatment of various diseases including Diabetes in folklore medicine. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Musa sapientum (MS) bark juice in Diabetic gastroparesis and in-vivo antioxidant effect in animal model. Diabetes was induced in rats by administering alloxan (120 mg/kg) in saline solution and housed for 6?8 week. Assessment of diabetes was done by GOD-POD method. The effects of MS bark juice (100 ml/kg) on gastric emptying time, intestinal transit time, contractility of fundus, pylorus and gastric acid secretion were observed in alloxan induced chronic diabetic rats. In addition the effect of MS bark juice on the tissue homogenate, oxidative stress parameters was evaluated like Lipid peroxidation (LPO), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Reduced Glutathione (GSH). MS bark juice significantly (p?0.01) Lowered the blood glucose level and at the same time contractility of fundus and pylorus was reduced significantlly (p?0.01). Moreover gastric emptying time, Intestinal transit time and gastric acid secretion were elevated. There was significant decrease in the levels of LPO and increase in the level of antioxidant enzymes GSH, SOD and CAT in MS bark juice treated group. Thus the present study suggests the effect of MS bark juice in treatment of gastroparesis by altering the oxidative stress parameters.
