Abstract

Punarnavasava, an Ayurvedic liquid dosage form containing self generated alcohol is commonly used to treat inflammatory conditions and edema. In the present study, we evaluated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and antiulcer activity of three different brands of Punarnavasava. The formulation significantly inhibited carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, cotton pellet-induced granuloma, formalin-induced paw licking, yeast induced hyperpyrexia and pyloric ligated ulcers in rats. The study concludes that Punarnavasava has anti-inflammatory, central as well as peripheral antinociceptive, antipyretic and antiulcer activity and thus justifies its use in inflammatory conditions.
