Abstract
Pulicaria crispa is traditional medicinal plant belong to Asteraceae family which is commonly known as Githjath. This plant distributed in warm countries, it has used in folk medicine for the treatment of various ailments, the plant has been used for many years in conventional medicine for the cure of heart diseases and as gastroprotective, due to its antioxidative nature. This study was initiated to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of Pulicaria crispa on blood glucose level, hematological parameters and biochemical parameters in alloxan induced diabetic rat. In acute toxicity and lethal dose study, the evaluation of median lethal dose (LD50) showed that even 5000 mg/kg of ethanolic extraction of Pulicaria crispa not toxic and can be considered as safe. The antidiabetic studies of Pulicaria crispa in alloxan induced diabetic rats showed that Pulicaria crispa have potent effect in reducing blood glucose level in dose dependent manner. On the other hand, Pulicaria crispa prevent body weight reduction beside increase protein level and showed significant decrease in cholesterol, urea and creatinin level. Pulicaria crispa did not affect hematological parameters to significant values in antidiabetic study. These results of antidiabetic study are the same as results obtained by Glibenclamide. The present study indicated that the ethanolic extraction Pulicaria crispa possess antidiabetic activities and provide evidence to support to traditional remedies.
