Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to identify possible prognostic factors for successful palliation and survival in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who underwent palliative surgery for malignant bowel obstruction (MBO).

Methods: The association between clinicopathologic variables with successful palliation and postoperative survival was examined in 23 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who underwent palliative surgery for MBO in our institute between 1990 and 2006. The association between successful palliation with variables was examined using the chi-square or Fisher¡¯s exact test. Overall survival curves were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method and were compared with the log-rank test.

Results: Chemotherapy after palliative surgery was associated with successful palliation (P=0.036). The interval from last treatment to palliative surgery>1 month (P=0.003), chemotherapy after palliative surgery (P=0.004), and successful palliation (P<0.001) were associated with improved survival.

Conclusion: The interval from last treatment to palliative surgery identifies patients who may benefit from palliative surgery for MBO caused by ovarian cancer.
