Abstract

The ethanol extracts from bark of red pine, Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini, was examined for single-dose and seven-day repeated-dose toxicity with Sprague-Dawley rats. The single oral dose of the extracts at 5000 mg/kg did not produce mortality or abnormal gross appearance of the internal organs of rats. In seven-day repeated-dose toxicity study, the extracts administered at doses of 100, 1000, or 5000 mg/kg for 7 days. There were no significant changes of body weights and organ weights during the experimental period. Hematological analysis and clinical blood chemistry have no revealed toxicity effect of the ethanol extracts from bark of Pinus densiflora. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes observed between controls and treated rats both sexes. Collectively, these data suggest that the ethanol extracts from bark of Pinus densiflora have a high margin of safety.
