Isoflurane Effects in the Cat Areas 17 and 18
Kim Jong-Nam

Abstract
Isoflurane is a new anesthetic in visual neuroscience research. The effect of volatile anesthetic isoflurane on the receptive field properties of neurons (24 cells) was measured in two cats. Multiple and single unit activities were recorded under stepwise increasing isoflurane concentrations of 0.5-2.0% from the cat areas 17 and 18 by using a multi-electrode array. A decrease in amplitude of the optimal response, directional bandwidth, and spatial frequency bandwidth occurred under high concentrations of isoflurane. It is recommended to use low concentration of isoflurane. Consciousness could be related with the strength of response in the visual cortex areas 17 and 18 even though the variability of response is in question among neuroscientists.
