Hermaphrodite means an animal or a human being in which male and female sex organs are present simultaneously, or in which the sex organs contain both ovarian and testicular tissue. Hermaphroditism occurs rarely in human and animal populations. Previously, we reported one hermaphrodite case and also found other three reported cases in Korea. Furthermore, recently, we found other two cases of hermaphrodite dog. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of the submitted cases and aimed to evaluate the possibility to develop an animal model to study genetic sexual difference disturbances. All hermaphrodites were identified in American Cocker Spaniel dogs in Korea. The characteristics were its enlarged os clitoris that was shown a reddish finger-like structure protruding from the vulva. The dogs revealed vulva hypertrophy, perivulvar dermatitis, skin fold dermatitis and clitoral hypertrophy. The dogs were diagnosed as hermaphroditism with ovotestes. To our knowledge, hermaphroditism may be a rare case in dog. However, as the results of this study, American Cocker Spaniel dogs have susceptible to hermaphroditism. We concluded that these findings contributed to research genetic animal model of sexual difference disturbance syndrome like as hermaphroditism.
