Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is an inherited disease and it is attributed to mutations in connective tissue gene in human. The cutaneous asthenia is an uncommon connective tissue disease in dog and cat and the clinical consequences is similar to human EDS. The animals with cutaneous asthenia revealed clinically integumental, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular signs. The cutaneous asthenia of animals has been called also EDS. In this study, we evaluate the cutaneous asthenia cases of dogs and analysis the characteristics. Also, we compare the cutaneous asthenia in dogs and EDS in human. 4 dogs (1 Yorkshire terrier and 3 Shitzu) were presented for investigation of cutaneous asthenia (hyperextensible skin). To determine the skin laxity, skin extensibility index (SEI) was calculated and skin biopsy was operated. Physical examination and blood test were performed. Average of SEI was 25%. Histopathological examination revealed decreased dense collagen fiber of dermis and number of hair follicles. All submitted animals were bright and alert. As the results, we can suggest that the cutaneous asthenia in dogs mimic EDS in human. This study may provide a valuable data on the study of EDS or cutaneous asthenia in veterinary clinics. Also, these findings may contribute to study and enhance the knowledge on human EDS.
