Miniature pig is known to be a most suitable species in xeno-transplantation of human organs. Autonomic nervous system coupled with G protein plays a pivotal role in the regulation of digestive system. The physiological role of autonomic nervous system may be linked to the interaction of its receptors. However, the distribution of adrenoceptors and muscarinic receptors in digestive system was not known in miniature pig. Thus we examined the expression of adrenoceptors (¥á1, ¥á2, ¥â1, and ¥â2) and muscarinic receptors (M1, M2, M3) mRNA in the digestive organs of miniature pigs. In the present study, ¥á1, ¥á2, ¥â1, M2, and M3 mRNA expression was evident in stomach but ¥â2 and M1 mRNA expression was not shown in stomach. ¥á1 receptor gene expression was relative high in small intestine and ¥á2 receptor gene expression in large intestine. In addition, ¥â1 receptor mRNA expression was restricted in duodenum, ileum, jejunum and cecum but was not shown in colon and rectum. However, ¥â2 receptor mRNA expression was not evident in these tissues. M1 mRNA expression was evident within in duodenum and ileum, M2 mRNA expression in stomach and small intestine, and M3 mRNA expression in all tissues. Moreover, ¥á1, ¥á2, ¥â1 and M3 was evident in pancreas. In conclusion, adrenoceptors and muscarinic receptors are tissue-specifically expressed in digestive organs of miniature pigs.
