This study was conducted to examine the effect of 2,3,3¡¯,4,4¡¯-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB#105) on the reproductive function of male rats. PCB#105 (0.01, 0.1, 0.5 §¶/§¸/day) in corn oil was orally administrated to adult male rats for 10 weeks. The body and testicular weights, and the serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), were measured at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of PCB treatment. The morphological changes in the rat testes were than analyzed by light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that PCBs caused no significant change in the body weights but caused a marked decrease in their testicular weights. A decrease in the serum LH and FSH levels of the PCB-treated rats was also observed. Moreover, the morphological studies that were conducted on the PCB-treated rats revealed that the size of their seminiferous tubules slightly decreased (LM), and that their nuclear membrane was damaged when 0.1 §¶/§¸/day PCB was administered to them for 10 weeks (TEM). These results suggest that the reproductive function of the adult male rats is sensitive to PCB, and that may affect their LH and FSH secretion.
