The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of secreting Helicobacter species from dogs and to identify the canine Helicobacter species, and to correlate the presence of a Helicobacter infection with several factors. Fecal samples of the studied dogs (n £½ 353) were initially frozen and stored at -20¡É until analysis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis revealed that 9.1% of the dogs (32 of 353) were detected secreting Helicobacter species in their stools. The positive samples were submitted to identify the species by species-specific PCR. The results revealed that 7.1% of dogs (25 of 353) were infected with Helicobacter heilmannii and 2.0% of dogs (7 of 353) had Helicobacter felis. None of them was harboring Helicobacter pylori or other Helicobacter species. We found no correlation between the genders of dogs and the prevalence of Helicobacter species. However, the prevalence was higher in the dogs of breeding kennels than those of animal clinics and it was increasing in older age groups. This study improved that dogs could secrete Helicobacter species, mainly Helicobacter heilmannii, and the detection rate was 9.1%.
