Abstract
We obtained partial sequences (970 bp) of the cytochrome b gene from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of 10 Korean gorals from 2 regions (Wha-cheon and Yang-gu) of Gangweon province. The Korean gorals were clearly genetically different from Chinese gorals but had a low level of genetic diversity among them. Since Nemorhaedus caudatus was prominently genetically different from N. goral, we considered that it would be reasonable to classify it as a separate subspecies. In this study based on the mtDNA cytochrome b gene, no obvious phylogenetic differences were observed among Korean gorals. However, a limitation of this study is the small number of gorals that were captured from restricted areas. Therefore, further DNA analyses of other genetic areas are necessary to confirm this classification.
