The effects of ¥â-glucan from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001 were observed on the rat rib fracture healing. 31.25, 62.5 and 125 §·/§¸ of ¥â-glucan were orally administered once a day for 13 days to ribfractured rats from 6 h after operation, and changes on the volume, mineral density, strength and histopathology of callus were observed. The effects of ¥â-glucan were compared with 10 §¶/§¸ of human parathyroid hormone 1-34 (hPTH) subcutaneously treated group. Treatment of ¥â-glucan induced dosedependent increases on the callus mineral density and strength with dramatical decreases on the callus volume. In addition, more active cartilaginous ossifications were observed in ¥â-glucan treated groups as compared with rib-fractured control; hence, the callus connective tissues and cartilaginous tissues were decreased, and consequently, osteoid tissues in callus were dramatically increased at histopathological observation. It is, therefore, concluded that ¥â-glucan used in the present study accelerated the fracture healing, especially on the ossification. 125 §·/§¸ of ¥â-glucan shows similar or slight lower effects on accelerating facture healing as compared with hPTH 10 §¶/§¸.
