Abstract
A natural herbal antiviral compound, WK07, was developed by Zoonosis Research Center of Wonkwang University. In this study, we are aimed to assess for the antiviral effect against a coronavirus, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), which induces acute viral enteric disease in swine of all ages. This study was conducted on the 1-week-old piglets (n=20) in the animal facility of Center for Animal Resources Development, Wonkwang University. The animals were divided with four groups; negative control group and PEDV-infected positive control group, WK07 treated two dosed groups with PEDV infection. During the study period, we compared clinical signs, weight increase rate, fecal scores, gross findings between the treated group and non treated group. After necropsy, necropsy findings and histopathological findings were conducted with the comparison between the groups. As the results of this study, WK07, a natural herbal antiviral compound showed the effects on the suppression of PEDV-induced lesions. It is suggested that WK07 have the antiviral effects against PEDV. WK07 could be used as the alternative material for antiviral drugs on the coronavirus like as PEDV.
