Comparison on the Anatomical Terminologies between the Korean Veterinary Anatomical Terminology (1993 and 2008) and the Korean Anatomical Terminology (2005)
Kim Dae-Joong

Abstract
It is important that the standardization and the harmonization of the scientific terms in the veterinary medicine. Especially, the veterinary anatomists have focused on the revision of the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (NAV, 5th ed., 2005) and the Nomina Emryologica Veterinaria (NEV, 2nd ed., 2006) by the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists (WAVA) members. Terminologia Anatomica (TA, Thieme) was published by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology (FCAT) of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA) in 1998, and the Korean Association of Anatomists (KAA) published the 5th edition of the Korean-English Anatomical Terminology (KAT) excluding histology and embryology based on the TA (1998) in 2005. The 1st Korean-English Veterinary Anatomical Terminology (KVAT, 1993) was published by the Korean Association of Veterinary Anatomists (KAVA) under the self-stimulation of the 3rd edition of the Korean-English Anatomical Terminology (1990) in 1993. Since the first edition of the KVAT (1993), I strongly hope that the new edition of that dictionary will be revised and harmonized with the recent version of the Korean-English Anatomical Terminology (KAT, 2005). The Korean veterinary anatomists decided the new revised edition based on the Japanese-English Veterinary Anatomical Terminology (JVAT, 3rd ed., 2000) for the 1st time. The references were changed from the JVAT (2000) into the NAV (2005) and the NEV (2006) except the Nomina Histologica (NH, revised 2nd ed., 1994). The new edition of the Korean-English Veterinary Anatomical Terminology (KVAT, 2008) has the characteristics with the size, the indexing system (Korean-English, English-Korean, and Latin indices), annotation, appendix, and more correct English terms from the Latin compared with the Japanese version and the KVAT (1993). A number of Korean terminologies of the KVAT (2008) describing same anatomical structures have been found almost same except the characteristic nominations of the domestic animals (palmar, plantar, feminine pudendum, female urethra, masculine mamma, hymen, forelimb, hindlimb, carpal bone, calcaneus, forestomach, ischial tuber, perineal region, perineal body, humerus, pelvic girdle, etc.). The future goal of KAVA/WAVA is to improve the terminology. New versions of the terminology must accommodate the needs of all who use it, in both the clinical and scientific fields with the international harmonization of the English of the veterinary anatomical terminology.
