Gait Training and Rhythm: A Review of Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation
Kwak Eun-Mi Emily

Cho Sung-Rae
Abstract
Gait requires complex interactions between the lower limbs, head, trunk, and arms. Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) has been shown to increase the effectiveness of traditional gait training for individuals with neurological disease such as stroke, Parkinson¡¯s disease, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury patients since early 1990¡¯s. A sizeable amount of research has been done to identify the underlying mechanism of rhythm on motor control. Results from several studies converge on the four major areas; the role of rhythm in rhythmic entrainment, the peculiar characteristic of the auditory-motor pathway, the anticipatory aspect of rhythm in a repeated and programmed movement pattern, and the role of rhythm in kinematic stability. In this review, the current research on the clinical application of RAS in various populations and the four major areas of the underlying mechanism of RAS will be discussed.
