Abstract
Vascular dementia (VaD) is one of the main cause of dementia with Alzheimer¡¯s disease (AD) and occupies the second most common cause after AD in the world. Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) which is defined as any clinical cognitive disorder of cerebrovascular origin, is chief symptom of VaD. In addition, recent data suggest that mixed dementia due to a combination of AD and vascular pathology is the most frequent form of dementia in the elderly. Translational animal models of VCI are necessary to further understand cerebrovascular disease (VaD/VCI) mechanisms that can contribute to impaired cognition and can be targeted in preclinical studies. This review describes the systemic analysis of appropriate animal models in VaD with VCI. Optimal choice among these models is expected to discover biomarkers, disease and disease mechanism-linked targets for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, thus facilitating early identification and intervention in VCI.
