Multiplex Cytokine Assay of Aqueous Humor in Patients with Normal Tension Glaucoma

Abstract
Purpose : To search for aqueous cytokines of normal tension glaucoma patients that are significantly different from those of normal and other open-angle glaucoma patients.

Methods : Normal tension glaucoma patients (NTG, 14 patients) were included as the study group, and patients without glaucoma (normal control, 58 patients), primary open-angle glaucoma patients (POAG, 20 patients), and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXF glaucoma, 10 patients) were included as controls. Before cataract surgery, the aqueous humor was collected through anterior puncture and a multiplex cytokine assay was performed. The concentration of cytokines was compared between the normal subjects and each glaucoma group.

Results : Transforming growth factor (TGF)-¥â1, TGF-¥â3, and interleukin-6 were not significantly different among normal control, NTG, and POAG, and were significantly higher in PXF glaucoma (p=0.007, p< 0.001, and p=0.046, respectively). TGF-¥â2 and CXCL10/interferon gamma inducible protein-10 did not show a significant difference among normal control, NTG, and PXF glaucoma, and were significantly higher in POAG (p=0.012 and p=0.003, respectively). Compared to the normal control or other glaucoma groups, there was no aqueous cytokine significantly higher or lower only in NTG.

Conclusions : There was no cytokines identified in NTG, which showed a significant change compared to normal subjects or other types of open-angle glaucoma.
