Abstract
Purpose : To establish a normative reference database more suitable for Korean population by compensating racial differences of the commercially available spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) database.

Methods : Three hundred twenty healthy eyes, range of 20-85 years, of Korean population were enrolled in the single center, prospective study. The optic nerve and macular parameters were measured with HOCT-1F (Huvitz, Anyang, Korea) certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

Results : The distribution by age was 20s 54 eyes, 30s 59 eyes, 40s 65 eyes, 50s 66 eyes, 60s 41 eyes, and over 70s 35 eyes. The mean age was 47.5 years, 154 eyes (48%) were male, and 166 eyes (52%) were female. The measurements by HOCT-1F were: vertical cup to disc (C/D) ratio 0.6, C/D ratio area 0.37, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness 101.6 ¥ìm, total macular thickness 289.4 ¥ìm and central macular thickness 241.5 ¥ìm. RNFL thickness and average total macular thickness had a negative correlation with increasing age. Average total macular thickness was significantly thicker in men than women.

Conclusions : A reference database specialized for Koreans was created using a recently developed SD-OCT. Most of the results showed a similar tendency with previous studies in normal Korean population and confirmed some differences between parameters according to age or sex. Therefore, these results can be represented as a reference database of normal Korean eyes, and it is expected to improve the diagnostic accuracy of SD-OCT as a reference more suitable for Koreans.
