Abstract

Purpose : The clinical interpretation of intraocular pressure (IOP) has been complicated due to intra-individual variation comprising diurnal and seasonal components. We tried to better understand seasonal variation of IOP based on health screening data of healthy Korean subjects linked with the climate records related to the time point of each measurement.
Methods : Healthy adults who visited The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul St. Mary¡¯s Hospital health check-up center and underwent tonometry exam were included. All available IOP results taken between March 2, 2015 and February 28, 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The monthly average IOP was determined by reference to the tonometer results. Seasonal climate information and patients¡¯ IOP information of 41,062 eyes were obtained, organized, and analyzed.
Results : For both female and male subjects, the categorical variable, seasons at the measurement of IOP, had significant influence on IOP after adjusting for other variables. Atmospheric temperature showed negative correlation with the average IOP, while atmospheric pressure positively correlated with average IOP.
Conclusions : IOP is affected by temperature and atmospheric pressure, and as such, shows seasonal variability. The probable factors underlying the seasonal variation of IOP are also proposed.
