A Clinical Observation on SCIATICA WITH LOWER BACK PAIN in the Field of Acupuncture & Moxibustion Department

Abstract
Sixty one cases of the patient suffering from Sciatica With Lower Back Pain were treated and observed clinically from July 5th, until September 8th, 1979, in the Dept. Of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyung Hee University. And the results are as follows.

1. The patients with Sciatica With Lower Back Pain were 11.4% of the total number of patients in Acupuncture & Moxibustion Department.
2. The distribution of sex in the Sciatica With Lower Back Pain group was male 60.7%, female 39.3% and the male to female ratio was 1.5:1. The, distribution of age was the thirties and the forties most predominant, the thirties in male and the forties in female.
3. Among 61 cases of the Sciatica With Lower Back Pain group, the Urinary Bladder Meridian Type was present in 42.6%, the Gall Bladder Meridian Type present in 32.8%, the Medial Type in 19.7%, the Combined Type in 4.9%.
4. The contributing factors were mainly overwork, lumbar sprain or reason unknown, and the types of work can be differentiated into active which was most predominant, inactive and moderate work that order.
5. The distribution of duration in Sciatica With Lower Back Pain disclosed that second acute stage (1-6 months) was most predominant, acute stage (1 month or under) and chronic stage (over 6 months) were similar in frequency. Grade II was most frequent grade of the seriousness of subjective symptom.
6. In clinical observation, mainly (95.1%) revealed both lumbar pain and lower limb pain at the same time. The distribution of the right and the left side in the Sciatica With Lower Back Pain group was similar but the right side in male and the left side in female were more frequent.
7. Straight Leg Raising Test disclosed the highest positive rate (91.8%) in the physical examinations, Degenerative Change was most predominant in 58.1% in abnormal findings on plain L-S spine X-ray, and the distribution of the 4 main pulse types in the electronic pulse diagnosis disclosed that the floating and rapid pulses were more frequent than the sunken and slow pulses.
8. In general, the more frequent the acupuncture treatment, the better the result was, and the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment was as follows; Excellent 27.5%, Good 55.0%, Poor 17.5% and so the rate of improvement was 82.5%. In the rate of improvement, males had a higher rate than females,, the acute stage was of a higher rate than the other stages, and the Medial Type was of a higher rate than the other types.
9. The mean number of acupuncture treatment in improving from the first time was 6 times and that in finishing the treatment with an Excellent result was 12 times.
