A Pharmacological Study of Whangryonhaedoktang

Abstract
Whangryonhaedoktang, which prevails among therapeutists, is one of the most inexclusible medicines for alleviating fever and antidoting. In the animal experiment to obtain pharmacological effects of the decoction of Whangryonhaedoktang and that decoction without Huangbaek (Pheliodendron amurense), I reached the following results.
l . Antipyretic effect of both decoctions was remarkable in rat and rabbit and that without
Huangbaek showed a stronger effect.
2. Analgesic effect of Whangryonhaedoktang was significant.
3. Anticonvulsive effect against C.N.S of them showed a slight significance in prolonging death time.
4. Hypnotic effect of Whangryonhaedoktang was recognized as significant in prolonging sleeping time by Pentobarbital Sodium.
5. There was an inhibiting effect on blood sugar and cholesterol content in the alloxanpoisoned rabbit.
6. The upward tendency of blood pressure was appeared after a temporary descension of
it, and that phenomenon was more conspicuous in the decoction without Huangbaek.
7. The effect of muscular relaxiation on the intestinal tract could be recognized as remar-
kable.
From the above results, it can be recognized that Whangryonhaedoktang is efficacious in antipyretic, analgesic, sedative, blood sugar-inhibiting, intestinal tract-relaxing action, and it is reasonable for Oriental Medicine to use it for delirium, insomnia, polydipsia, gastralgia, and diarrhea. Besides, as the decoction without Huangbaek was stronger in the antipyretic and hypertensive effects, the make-up of prescription is thought to be important.
