Experimental Studies on Wang-Sesimtang in Simbyung Syndrome

Abstract
On the basis of the classical medical references of the Oriental medicine, which described that Wang-Sasimtang has effectiveness to psychoneurotic, circulatory, febrile, dolar, and inflammatory symptoms of Simbyung syndrome, experimental studies in vitro and in vivo were done with crude fractions obtained from the recipe and results of specific effectiveness to each symptom were obtained as follows.
1. Anti-picrotoxin and anti-caffeine effects were recognized by fraction III in mouse
group.
2. In acetic acid method experiment, analgetic effect was noted in 45.1% of mouse
group by fraction I and, also, the same effects were obtained in a pressure pain
threshold study on the rat hind paws by fraction I, II and III, respectively.
3. Antipyretic effect was noted by fraction I in rat group, and the same significant
actions were also seen by fraction I, II and III in rabbit group.
4. A prominent prolongation of anesthetic time was observed by fraction III in mouse group.
5.. Effectiveness was also recognized by fraction I and III in a heart contraction study due to Straub method in forgs.
6. An inhibitory effect was shown by fraction III on the elevation of blood pressure induced by adrenalin in rabbits.
7. In a unique in vitro study on inhibition of bacterial growth, there was fairly noted an inhibitory activity on strains of bacteria by fraction III but a partial inhibition was recognized by fraction I.
As is shown above, each crude fraction of Wang-Sasimtang revealed specific effectiveness to each symptom of Simbyung Syndrome in the experimental studies in vitro and in vivo. Accordingly, it has been proved that Wang-Sasimtang retains an ample therapeutic value to control Simhwa and Simyul of Simbyung Syndrome. Therefore, it could be expected that purifying of the fractions of the recipe would bring about more refined results thereafter.
*Symbyung syndrome is an Oriental medical concept which connotes psychoneurotic, circulatory, febrile, dolor and inflammatory symptoms.
