Abstract
In order to determine the effects of Palmiwon on the changes of physiological function: the body weight, body temperature, hematocrit, serum Na+. K+contents, blood sugar, serum free fatty acid, total proteins and serum cortisol contents in starved rats, the experimental animals. were divided into two groups; the control group was given with water alone whereas Palmiwon group was given simultaneously water and Palmiwon decoctionupon the total starvation for 6th days, from the 7th day were refeeding.
Palmiwon was given by oral on the base of 1.6ml per 100g of body weight, it was consisted of eight herb drugs: Rehmanniae Radix vapo, Discoreae Radix, Corni Fructus, Hoelon, Moutan Radicis Cortex, Alismatis Rhizoma, Cinnamimi Cortex and Aconiti Tuber. The results were as follows:
1. Body weight was increased at the refeeding period with Palmiwon.
2. Body temperature was suppressed on lowering at the starved period with Palmiwon.
3. Hematocrit was depressed on increasing at the starved period with Palmiwon.
4. Serum Na+ and K+ contents were decreased with Palmiwon
5. Serum glucose and free fatty acid contents were rapidly recovered on increasing with Palmiwon.
6. Total protein content was decreased on lowering at starved period with Palmiwon.
7. Serum cortisol content was increased with Palmiwon.
According to the above results, it is concluded that the influence of Palmiwon the changes of physiological function against the starvation seems to recover the renal functions and the functions of digestive system.
