Effects of Oyotang on Cough and Asthma

Abstract
Oyotang consists of Glycyrrhizae Radix, Ephedrae Herba, Armeniacae Semer¢¥, Platycodi Raidx and Nepetae Herba. It has widely been prescribed in Oriental medicine for controlling of cough, asthma, nasal obstruction, pharyngeal pain and hoarseness.
Experimental studies were implemented on analgesic, sedative, anticonvulsive, antitussive and antihistamine actions.
The results of the studies were as follows:
1. Significant anticonvulsive action was recognized by fraction III.
2. Sedative and analgesic actions were noted by fraction I and III.
3. Relaxing action was shown on the extracted ileum in mice and antagonistic action was seen on BaC12-induced contraction of the ileum that the relaxing effect of the intestinal smooth muscle was recognized.
4. Antihistamine and relaxed dillatating actions were recognized on the extracted ileum and serial broncheal samples in guinea-pigs.
5. Mild hypertensive action was recognized on the carotid artery in rabbits.
6. Antitussive action was noted on mechanically irritated coughs in dogs and cats.
In connection with the results of the studies, effects based on the Oriental medical references were consistant with the actual experimental results. It was considered that effective application of OYOTANG for treatment of cough and asthma could be justified.
