Experimental Studies on the Effect of Dangkwisoo-San on the CCI©þ-Induced Liver Damage in Albino-Rats

Abstract
Dangkwisoo-San has been applied to various conditions with congestion and extravasated blood in the Oriental Medicine. The effectiveness of Dangkwisoo-San on the repair of carbon tetrachloride (CCI4) induced-liver damage in Albino rats was biochemically and histologically stuided.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. Dangkwisoo-San had a reducing action of serum alkaline phosphatase, alphahydroxybutrate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, leucine aminopeptidase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase and glutamic pyrubic transaminase activities of the rats pretreated with CCI4.
2. Dangkwisoo-San appeared to promote restoration of the impaired functions following congestion, necrosis and fatty change of hepatic cells damaged by CCI4 injection, and the repair process was manifested by a slight increase in periodic acid Schiff positive substances in necrotic hepatocytes.
4. The effect of Dangkwisoo-San a as observed biochemically and histologically 48 hours after the administration of the preparation.
5. No clear-cut difference on the effect of Dangkwisoo-San was present between types (decoction or extract) and dosages of the preparation prescribed. In summary of the experimental results described above. Dangkwisoo-San appeared helpful for promoting repair of liver cell necrosis followed by congestion, and it was suggested that Dangkwisoo-San was effective on liver cell damage.
