Study on the Effects of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Laser Beam Acupuncture upon the Paw Edema and Inflammation in Rat


Abstract
In order to study the effect of acupuncture, moxibustion and laser beam acupuncture on the paw edema induced by carrageenin, acetic acid, Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant, 54C hot water and bruise on the sole of : he right paw of the rat, stimulation were applied respectively at the loci of Hyeon Jong (G 39) and Palpung (non-meridian locus between meta-tarsal and phalangeal point on the foot).
Anti-edematous and¢¥ anti-inflammatory effects were studied by measuring the volumes of the paw edema and checking the leucocyte emigration in rats. The following results have been obtained:
1) With the needles inserted at the Pal-pung locus, the inhibitory rate of paw edema formation induced by carrageenin, acetic acid, Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant and 54C hot water showed effectively statistical values and especially revealed effectively in the 54C hot water and carrageenin induced group. Inhibitory effect of leucocyte emigration was also revealed with significant values.
2) Moxa-cauterization on Pal-pung locus made the results of higher inhibitory rate upon the paw edema induced by carrageenin and hot water than the control group.
3) By the laser beam acupuncture on Pal-pung locus, inhibitory rate upon the paw edema induced by carrageenin, Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant and hot water were effectively higher than the control group and especially the Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant group showed the highest inhibitory effect among them. Inhibitory effect of leucocyte emigration was also noted remarkably by laser beam acupuncture.
4) With the needles inserted at the Hyeon-jong locus, the inhibitory rate of paw edema formation induced by carrageenin, Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant and hot water showed effectively statistical values than the control group, and especially carrageenin induced group revealed the highest inhibitory effect among them.
5) Moxa-cauterization on Hyeon-jong locus made the better results of inhibitory effect upon the paw edema induced by carrageenin, hot water and bruise than the control group.
Especially hot water induced group showed the most effective among tnem.
6) By the laser beam acupuncture on Hyeon-jong locus, higher inhibitory rate upon the paw edema induced by carrageenin, acetic acid and Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant was shown and revealed the most effective in the Freund¢¥s complete adjuvant group among them. Inhibitory effect of leucocyte emigration was also significantly noted by laser beam acupuncture.
According to above results, it is concluded that acupuncture, moxa-cauterization and laser beam acupuncture at the loci of Hyeon jbng and Pal-pung showed the marked inhibitory effect upon the paw edema and the leucocyte emigration, and they seem to be applied to the inflammatory diseases.
