Effect of Hwadam, Onwie and Yanghyeol therapies on Gastric Ulcer in Rats

Abstract
Hwadamcheonghwatang, Onwieum and Yanghyeolsamultang have been prescribed for gastric ulcer in oriental medicine.
This studies were undertaken in an atten^pt to investigate the effects of therapies on gastric ulcer induced by aspirin, indomethacin and acetic acid in rats. Effects of three prescriptions with solid extract or mixture of individual solid extract were compared.
The following results of the studies were obtained:
1. Effects of Hwadam and Yanghyeol therapies on secretion of gastric juice, gastric acid and pepsin activities in gastric juice of rats showed good results compared with Onwie therapy.
2. Effects of Hwadam and Yanghyeol therapies on gastric ulcer induced by aspirin, indomethacine in rats showed good inhibition compared with Onwie therapy.
3. Effects of Onwie and Yanghyeol therapies on gastric ulcer induced by stress in rats showed remarkable results compared with Hwadamtherapy.
4. Curative effects of Hwadam, Onwie and Yanghyeol therapies on acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats showed also remarkably good results after 10 days and effect of Yanghyeol therapy showed significant results compared with Hwadam and Onwie therapies after 15 days. In histological studies of 10 day group, effect of promoting recovery of ulcer was consistent with ulcer index of experimental group in ulcer region.
5. The solid extract power of three prescriptions demonstrated good results compared with the mixture of individual extract powder.
As far as the results of the studies are concerned, it is considered that the three therapies were recognized to be compatible with the effects of the therapies for gastric ulcer used clinically in oriental medicine. The studies may suggest a direction to pursue research on the other oriental medicine therapies.
