Effect of Tongkyungtang for the Ovulation and Maintenance of Pregnancy in Rats and Rabbits


Abstract
The Tongkyungtang using amenorrhoea are composed Angelicas gigantic Radix, Cnidii Rhizoma, Paeoniae Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Rhei undulati Rhizoma, Cassiae Cortex, Magnoliae officinelis Cortex, Ponciri Fructus, Scutellariae Radix, Caesalpiniae Lignum, Carthami Flos, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Zizyphi inermis Fructus and Mume Fructus. This studies were undertaken in an attempt to investigate the effects of Tongkyungtang on the ovulation, maintenance of pregnancy and function of corpus luteum in pregnant animals. The experimental animals were divided into three groups and treated as follows: The control group was administered physiological saline solution; the A group was administered extracts of combination of Tongkyungtang; The B group was administered extracts of each-drug combination of Tongkyungtang.
The following results were obtained:
1. It was confirmed that Tongkyungtang had shown abortive effect on rats being 15 and 18 days pregnant.
2. Tongkyungtang was showed an inhibitory effect for the implantation in pregnant rabbits, but abortive effect was not showed.
3. The contents of progesterone in serum of rabbits pretreated with HCG was significantly decreased by administration of Tongkyungtang.
4. .The estradiol levels in serum of rabbits pretreated with HCG was decreased by administration of Tongkyungtang.
5. Tongkyungtang was not showed an inhibiting effect on the ovulation of rats and facilitated ovulation by HCG in rabbits.
6. The efficacy of extracts of Tongkyungtang was higher than combination of
each drug¢¥s extracts of Tongkyungtang, but there was no significance between two groups.
7. It is concluded that the abortion of pregnant rats and inhibitory effect of implantation fertilized ova in rabbits seem to inhibit function of corpus luteum.
