An Experimental Study on the Efficiency of Samulanshin-Tang

Abstract
Although the Samulanshin-Tang has been widely used in clinical purposes in the oriental medicine, its clinical efficiency is only documented for the case of palpitation in the literatures.
The present experiments were undertaken to investigate the clinical efficiency of Samulanshin-Tang comparing the effects with animal experiments, and to validate its oriental medical theory.
The results obtained from the experiments with methanol extract of Samulanshin-Tang were as follows.
1. Analgesic effect was observed by the administration of Samulanshin-Tang extract (10mg/10g. body weight) to mice (P < 0.001).
2. Samulanshin-Tang extract produced antipyretic effect on the typhoid vaccine-induced fevered animals.
3. Sedative effect was observed at 30 minutes after the administration of Samulanshin-Tang extract (10mg/10g. body weight) to the animals in the experiments with Rotor rod and wheel cage method.
4. Samulanshin-Tang extract (10mg/10g. body weight) produced a prolongation
of the duration time of pentobarbital anesthesia in the animals (P < 0.01).
5. Samulanshin-Tang extract (0.01g/ml) produced intestinal relaxation of the
animals in the experiments with Magnus method.
6. Samulanshin-Tang extract produced the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle in the experiments with Takagi method.
7. Samulanshin-Tang extract (10%) produced significant increase in flow rate of blood vessels in animals in the experiments with Krawkow-Pissemski method.
8. Samulanshin-Tang (100mg/kg. body weight) produced hypotensive effect in animals in the experiments with blood pressure measurements through carotid artery.
It is concluded from the experimental results with animals that the efficiency of Samulanshin-Tang may be concerned with analgesic, antipyretic, sedative, hypotensive, and intestinal smooth muscular relaxing effects.
