The experiment was performed in an attempt to study the effect of Aquaacupuncture of Sileris Radix extract solution on the epithelium of the trachea of rats exposed to cold environment. Sixty five adult rats weighing about 150200 gm were divided into 3 groups : Normal, Control, and Experimental groups.
Control groups were exposed to cold twice a day for 3 days, 30 minutes in each time. Experimental groups were given injection of Aquaacupuncture of 0.1 mQ of 10.0 g% Sileris Radix extract solution on Junjoong (CV 17) whenever exposing the rats to cold environment.
The animals were sacrificed on the 3, 6, 9, 24, 48 and 72 hours after last cold environment.
The following results were obtained.
1) The tracheal epithelium of the rats exposed to cold environment resulted in destruction and atrophy of membranes, loss of mucous cells and mucus secretion.
2) Destructive changes of the tracheal epithelium and detachments of the cilia resulting from cold environment were reduced in experimental groups.
3) Mucus stained with purple color was appeared at 24 hrs group in control groups, and at 9 hrs group in experimental groups for the first time.
4) The tracheal epithelia were restored completely at 72 hrs group in control groups, and at 48 hrs group in experimental groups.
From the above findings, it is concluded that the Aqua-acupuncture of Sileris Radix extract solution has protective action to a certain degree on the deterioration of tracheal epithelium due to cold environment and expedited its restoration.
