A Study on the Academic Characteristics of Medicine in the Geum-Won Era


Abstract
GeumWon dynasty is the era which Song and Geum and Won are fighting one another, and the people were suffering from war and disease, so there were acute demand for new medical science.
Being caused by the situation of the era, Yu Wan So, Jang Jong Jeung, Lee Dong Won, Ju Dan Gye etc appeared and accomplished epochal development on oriental medicine. So historian said that the schools of confucianism were divided in Song dynasty - nd the schools of medicine were divided in GeumWon era. There was much development on both clinical and theoretical medicine, but theoretical development was remarkable. Therefore oriental medicine not only was got much change and development on the theory of physiology, pathology, pharmacology but also treatments according to the symptoms were concretely systemized on clinic.
Centering around the four noted physicians of GeumWon era, who leaded medical development of this era, the writer can summarized the academic characteristics of medicine in the GeumWon era as follow.
1) Yu Wan So was the first of four noted physicians of GeumWon era. He advocated YukGiByungGi theory and HangHaeSeungJe theory and because he was a scholar who insisted more than other the working of Hwa and Yeul in outbreak of disease and used more cold drug in curing, they called him Han--Ryang--Pa. His YukGi--ByungGi theory and HwaYeulByung theory influenced to Jang Ja Hwa, Ju Dan Gye and he became the father of YukGi and OnYeul schools.
2) JangJongJeung emulated Yu Wan So as a model and followed the his YukGiByungGi theory, but entreatment he advocated that it is the most important method to have the patients to Sweating and Vomiting and Diarrhea to drive away external malace. Because he especially laid stress on diarrhea method they called him Gong--HaPa.
3) Lee Dong Won advocated that most disease are originated by internal demage of viscera, demage of the spirit which animates and control the body, and because in treatment he laid stress on reimforcing the spleen and stomach, they called him BoTo--Pa. His theory was transmitted to Seol Ci, Jo Yang Gyu, Lee Jung Jae and Jang Gye Bin of Myeong dynasty by Na Cheon ik, Wang Ho Go and was succeeded and developed by them. So they called him the father of JangBuByungGi School.
4) Ju Dan Gye advocated that semen was exhausted by shaking of Sang Hwa and so human body are always left over Yang but are always short of Yeum, which is the cause of illness. Because in treatment he gave the first consideration to JaYeumGang--Hwa, We called him JaYeum--Pa.
5) Being influenced GoGeumiGue theory of Jang GyeolGo, four noted physicians of GeumWon era prescribed properly without sticking to old prescription and with other physicians following of them at that times, the method of prescription underwent great change.
