The Effect of Sagan-tang Applied to Conjunctivitis on Hepatic Damage in Rats

Abstract
In order to study the clinical efficacy of Sagan-tang which is applied to conjunctivitis to be caused by liver heat fullness, the effects of Sgan-t ang which were made through compounded extracts and compounded extracts made by each mixture, on the liver damage induced by Thioacetamide (TAA) in rats, were biochemically examined.
The results were summarized as follows:
1) Sagan-tang compounded extracts brought about each significant change in the activity of GOT at 72 hours (P < 0.01) and at 96 hours (P < 0.05). Sagan-tang compounded extracts made by each mixture brought about significant change only once at 72 hours (P < 0.02).
The significant changes of Sagan-tang compounded extracts in the activity of GPT were observed at 48 hours (P < 0.05), 72 hours (P < 0.01) and 96 hours (P < 0.05), whereas the significant change of Sagan-tang compounded extracts made by each mixture in the activity of this enzyme only once at 74 hours (P < 0.05) was noted.
2) In the activity of ALP all the Sagan-tang extracts brought about significant changes at 72 hours (P < 0.02) and at 96 hours (P < 0.05).
3) In the activity of LDH Sagan-tang compounded extracts brought about each significant change at 72 hours (P < 0.02) and 96 hours (P < 0.05), and Sagan-Tang compounded extracts made by each mixture brought about significant
changes (P < 0.05) at 72 hours and 96 hours.
In the view of the above conclusions, Sagan-tang was recognized to be helpfull for the recovery of the liver damage induced by TAA, therefore Sagan-tang is assumed to have a curative effect against conjunctivitis to be caused by liver heat fullness.
